Scope and Contents
A series of letters sent by Charles Lyell, to others. Some of these correspondents also appear in the two A-Z series. It is not clear why these letters have been separated from earlier series of records, however they may have been gathered together by Katharine Lyell in her editorial of 'Life, Letters and Journals', with some marked 'not copied', published or unpublished.

Detailing Lyell's concerns and proposed actions, relating to a proposal by Huxley, to work to cancel a note and to add a P.S. [postscript] to the preface of 'Antiquity of Man', relating to Lubbock's challenge. Lyell writes that he has shown the resultant correspondance prior to these letters, to Hooker, Busk and then Darwin:
5 June 1865 Lyell writes in haste - Mary takes over the writing - as he is preparing to leave for 3 months on the Continent.

Scientific journal of Sir Charles Lyell, covers subjects such as creation of species - and thoughts on the evolution of man. Lyell refers to others such as Darwin, Hooker, Wollaston and topics such as the glacial epoch, rudimentary organs, volcanoes, Madeira, molluscs, fossil faunas, Australian fauna, Niagara, coal and New Zealand. Lyell provides his own index. Some writing is by Mary Lyell.

Of dark green leather, this notebook contains Charles Lyell's thoughts and observations while on a trip to Copenhagen with his wife Mary Lyell. On the front cover is written "London - Copenhagen April to June 1837 A". In the inside cover Lyell's address is written; "Mr C Lyell 16 Hart Street Bloomsbury Square". This dark red Notebook starts in London with Mary and Leonard Lyell, and documents travels in Pembrokeshire, Wales, with an index created by Arabella Buckley. Lyell studies submerged forests, beaches, caves and iron works making notes and sketches, and referencing experts as well as local guides. Several meetings 'with Darwin'. Final pages relate to Grindle Pit, Bury St Edmunds, with sections written by Buckley that appear to be dictated by Lyell. ...

This black Notebook is annotated with Lyell's name, address at 73 Harley Street, London. The Notebook begins with the end a tour of Devon - started in the previous Notebook 257 - with Lyell in Barnstaple. Mostly written by Buckley, there are sections of very poor writing at times, which could be Lyell's own. From Devon to Bristol Clifton Bridge and Bath.
